Why I Do Coffee Enemas 3x Per Week, and Why You Should Too

People used to say to me, whenever I spoke about detox, “That’s what the liver and kidneys are for.” Poor them. Poor people. They simply don’t get it, do they? It was confusing nonetheless — I heard it enough times to start doubting what my own body was telling me. So I took the reins, and I prevailed.

Today, coffee enemas are part of my routine. I do them three times a week. In this essay I will tell you why I do them, why I believe they belong in any real heavy metal detox, and why I think you should consider them too.

How my health journey began

My heavy metal poisoning began after a tetanus shot. In the years that followed, I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme, Hashimoto’s, celiac disease, high cholesterol, chronic fatigue syndrome, POTS, and mast cell activation. My body reacted to almost everything. For a time, I could eat only three foods.

There was a point when I could no longer trust the stories I had been given by so-called “conventional wisdom” — because as it turned out, it wasn’t so wise. The more I listened, the worse I became. I had to become curious. I had to pay attention. I had to decide that I would not outsource my life or my body.

I will say this plainly: NEVER outsource your health. Not once, not a little, not for convenience. No one will ever live inside your body but you. I took my life and my body into my own hands, and that decision changed everything.

What I experienced after my 61-day juice fast

After a 61-day juice fast, I experienced a profound shift. I describe clearing 15 pounds of what I understood as mucoid plaque, and it felt as if my brain came back online after a decade of brain fog.

But here is the thing about deep clearing: when the body finally starts letting go, the work is not over. The toxins that leave their hiding places need somewhere to go, or they can be reabsorbed before they ever leave. That is why the binders matter — you cannot detox without them — and it is why I kept going after the fast ended. The fast opened the door. The maintenance work is how I keep it open.

Why coffee enemas became part of my routine

Why coffee? Because when coffee is taken this way, it goes straight to work on the liver and the bile. The liver is where the body collects what it cannot use — metals, chemicals, the residue of a modern life — and bile is how it ships that load out. Coffee stimulates that flow. In my experience, it helps the body release what it has been holding, and then the binders catch it and carry it out. Release, bind, remove. That is the rhythm.

I do them three times a week because that is what keeps me feeling clear. This is not a one-time heroic event like the 61-day fast. It is steady, quiet maintenance — the body on my side, week after week. For me, it has become less like a procedure and more like a practice, almost a meditation. Twenty minutes to lie down, be still, and let my body do its work. I come out of it calmer than I went in.

And remember what people told me: that’s what the liver and kidneys are for. Yes, we have a liver and kidneys. I believe the modern toxic load can overwhelm the body’s own pathways. Fluoride in the water. Mold in the walls. Flame retardants in the furniture. The incoming tide never stops. A little help clearing the water out of the boat is not madness. It is seamanship.

Taking the reins

When you have been sick for a long time, it can be hard to tell the difference between your own knowing and someone else’s certainty. I’ve been there. I know what it is to search for the next answer and hope a new protocol will finally explain everything.

Taking the reins means you decide. You research. You notice what your body does and does not respond to. You move slowly, and you pay attention the whole way. If you are exploring a heavy metal detox or a mercury detox, begin by cleaning up your diet, your thoughts, your exposure to wifi — and to conventional “wisdom.” Go slowly. Your body will tell you what it needs, and your job is to listen.

If you feel called to explore this work and want guidance, don’t do it alone. Reach out to me — I coach people through fasting and detox, with preparation and support at every step. That is part of the work I do, and I would be honored to walk that road with you.

A practice of listening to your own story

Here is how I began with any new practice: a notebook and a few honest questions. Set aside a few quiet minutes, and answer them without trying to make your story sound neat:

Go at your own pace. You don’t have to know how the story ends. You just need to put your headphones on and begin.

I began writing in 2019 while I was sick. I didn’t have the full story in front of me; I had only the next sentence. Over time, writing became a way to hear what I had been unable to say and to make room for a different understanding of my life. That is one reason I believe story can be medicine, not because it replaces the body’s needs, but because telling the truth can help us meet ourselves where we are.

If you want to read more of my journey, my memoir, Awakening in an Age of Metals, and my Substack hold more of the story. I also coach people through fasting and detox, and you can reach me at michellekatz2010@gmail.com if you’d like to talk about my experience.

I do coffee enemas three times a week because they are part of how I care for this body that carried me through hell and brought me back. They keep me clear, they keep me calm, and they are one of the reasons my brain is still online.

And if you want the whole story — the tetanus shot, the years of illness, the fast, and everything that came after — it is all in my book. Awakening in an Age of Metals is where this journey lives in full. I wrote it so you wouldn’t have to walk this road blind the way I did.

Your healing story belongs to you. Your body is yours. Take the reins. Begin.
